Dieselgate got me thinking about the rest of VW’s performance lineup. It’s pretty common thought that going back—at least—to the Mk6 GTI, that these models were underrated in terms of horsepower. A quick Google search verifies the question comes up a lot, and it’s only when the Mk6 gets dynoed (with perhaps nothing in the OBD2 port) that this claim has perhaps been verified. There’s also rumors of the Mk7 being underrated.
Do you think that perhaps VW’s gas engines are running similar test-bending software, too, whether it’s to avoid emissions or insurance penalties, or something else entirely?

I doubt it, I think ze germans just tend to under-rate things.

The GTI’s have been under-rated for years.... I’ve heard it’s becuase the Germans measure hp at the wheel, versus the crank, like most other manufacturers....

Honestly, all sorts of cars are showing remarkably high dyno results these days...Fiesta ST and 500 Abarth owners report much higher whp numbers than one would expect from the advertised crank figures. I think it’s more conservatism to preserve the residuals of higher tier cars (the Focus ST may lose sales if the Fiesta ST is making 225hp instead of 200), as well as insurance reasons.

I think a lot of the manufacturers fudge some numbers. For years the evo and wrx were regularly getting dyno numbers more than officially released, because Japan has weird regulations over 276hp.

This depends so much on the dyno it isn’t funny. Really, unless the dyno used is also used for manufacturer(not just vehicle manufacturers) product tests then I find it hard to trust any of the numbers. The cost to get your vehicle dyno’d at the local shop is way less than the cost of actually having a dyno maintained and calibrated as often as they need to be, so unless the dyno used is raking in 6 figures of business a year, it’s likely out a bit more than you might expect.
